Hounds reach state semifinals

Published: Sunday, May 11, 2008 4:53 PM CDT
SEARCY — The Marmaduke Greyhounds blasted their way into the Class 3A state baseball semifinals Saturday, destroying Mayflower 18-2 in five innings.

Despite a late-night, extra-inning win over Pea Ridge in the opening round on Friday, Marmaduke returned Saturday and pummeled Mayflower with a 19-hit attack. The Greyhounds scored two in the first, six in the second and added a pair of five-run innings to polish off the romp.

“We beat the cover off the ball,” Marmaduke coach Larry Willis said.

Ray Taylor went 4-for-5 and Jacob Mason, Josh Upchurch and winning pitcher Dexter Jordan had three hits each in the rout. Mason belted a home run and drove in five runs while Upchurch and Jordan each had two RBIs.

Trent Smith and Andrew Dulaney both went 2-for-4 and Kyle Huckabay had an RBI single for Marmaduke (15-9).

Jordan gave up two unearned runs on five hits and fanned four in his five-inning stint.

Friday night, it was a different story as the Hounds found themselves in a tight game with the Pea Ridge Blackhawks.

Down 3-1, the Hounds tied it with a two-run sixth inning. Jordan and Smith sparked the rally with consecutive singles and Marmaduke used an error, a walk and a passed ball to even the score.

After a scoreless seventh, Jordan reached on an infield dribbler in the MHS eighth. Running on the next pitch, Jordan scored all the way from first on a drive to the fence by Smith, plating the game-winning run.

In addition to the big RBI, Smith pitched a three-hitter. The senior struck out nine in his complete-game effort. Both Pea Ridge runs were unearned.

Jordan and Smith led offensively with two hits each. Taylor and Dulaney had one apiece.

Marmaduke now faces Lincoln at 4 p.m. Monday at the Harding University field.
