PSD cracks down on personal day misuse

The Paragould School District is considering cutting the amount of personal days for its employees.

According to Paragould School District Superintendent Dr. Aaron Hosman, employees had been allowed two personal days. Hosman told Monday night’s meeting of the Paragould School Board the personnel committee had allowed for two additional personal days to be used in extenuating circumstances.

However, Hosman said staff has taken advantage of the policy and taken these personal days as vacation days instead of what they were intended for.

“These days were not to be used for vacations in the school year,” the superintendent said. “They were for extenuating circumstances.”

He cited the case when a Marmaduke employee lost her home during a tornado and could have used additional personal days.

Hosman said one individual took four personal days to go to Disney World a week before Benchmark Exams. “This is not acceptable,” Hosman said.

The superintendent said four staff members misused the days this way which is the reason he wants to change the personal days allowed. If approved by the personnel policy committee, staff will only be allotted two personal days.

Another policy proposal concerned college reimbursement policy. Hosman wants those planning to be reimbursed to submit requests ahead of time.

A proposal for a swim coach index was also brought to the board table.

Finally, a proposal to add a step to salary increases for classified employees with 18 years of service was addressed. If approved, it will cost the district approximately $11,000. Hosman said if this is not instituted several classified employees will not receive a raise this coming school year.

All the personnel policy proposals will be reviewed by the personnel committee and be brought to the June school board meeting to be implemented July 1.

" Readers should know that the teacher who went to Disney world before the Benchmark exam did not have students who were in a grade that took the Benchmark examination. Students begin taking the Benchmark in third grade. Also, any use of personal days is surely approved by the superintendent himself. Many school districts have different numbers of personal vs. sick days for employees. Be assured, readers, the teachers of the Paragould School District are very dedicated to their students. "

" your article makes it sound like a "jail break" on personal days. is it reasonable for all to suffer over the mis-deads of a few? doesn't use of vacation / personal days have to be approved by the chain-of-command? is it state-mandated legislation to air your dirty laundry at school board meetings? what's next on the agenda, use of school property for "mary kay" meetings? "

" Just to correct Joe on his entry: every grade level takes the benchmark exams. The only difference is that the grades K thur 2 testing days are shorter in length and by the amount of testing days. So it is still a big deal when the teacher is missing work the week before the benchmark test. "
