A motions hearing Tuesday set aside dates in October for the capital murder trial for Kristopher Parker.
Parker was charged with capital murder, rape and kidnapping for the murder of Tiffany Parker.
According to a probable cause affidavit, around 10:30 p.m. last June 6, Paragould police responded to 1508 Linwood Drive at the request of the mother of Tiffany Parker, 30, of the Linwood address. The mother, Jerris Raines, contacted authorities after she was unable to get in touch with her daughter. Once entry was made into the residence by Paragould officers, they found Tiffany lying on the floor dead.
The affidavit states Raines attempted to get in touch with Tiffany between 7:30 and 8 p.m., but did not get a response. At 8:18 p.m., Raines told authorities she received a call from Parker on Tiffany’s cell phone. Parker told Raines that Tiffany was in the shower and couldn’t come to the phone.
Paragould Police Lt. Tony Williams told the Daily Press a “blunt object” believed to be the murder weapon was located in the eastern part of Greene County.
According to the affidavit, Raines told authorities Tiffany had custody of her and Kris’s son, Carson. He was missing at the time. At 8 a.m., June 7, Carson was returned to Sheriff Dan Langston in western Greene County.
After further investigation of the scene, a charge of rape was added according to Greene County Deputy Prosecutor Randy Philhours.
Judge David Laser set aside several dates in October for Parker’s trial, according to Greene County Deputy Prosecutor Kimberly Dale.
She noted the continuance was granted after Arkansas Public Defender Cheryl Batten informed the court that she had recently put in notice with the state Public Defender Commission to take on another job.
Batten was lead counsel for the defense in this case. Robby Golden and Teri Chambers will remain on the defense’s legal counsel team.
Also, a motion to suppress a statement given by Parker to Arkansas State Police Special Agent Scott Pillow was denied. Dale said Pillow received a lengthy statement from Parker shortly after Parker turned himself in to the Greene County Sheriff’s Office.
Dale said Paragould Police Lt. Tony Williams and Pillow also spoke with Parker at the Paragould Police Department.
“Judge Laser said the statement is still admissible,” Dale said. “We had been concerned about the timing surrounding the statement so we are pleased that he denied the motion.”
Attorneys also discussed the exclusion of “gruesome” photos during the trial. Dale said Laser decided to postpone this matter until a later hearing date.
