John Kennett sold his business in January but still wanted to be close to the public.

The part time position of Veterans Service Officer came open after the incumbent, Weldon Roberts resigned. Kennett decided to jump at the opportunity.

“I was looking for something less stressful,” Kennett said. He was formerly the owner of Child Art Studio and decided to sell the business in January.

Kennett said that so far he has gotten his wish for a less stressful job.

“I help veterans find out what benefits they are qualified for and then help them get those benefits,” he said.

Kennett said some of the benefits he has helped with so far include getting medical attention and prescription benefits for veterans through the local clinic as well as the Veteran’s Administration hospital in Poplar Bluff, Mo. He said he has also assisted with helping obtain education benefits for veterans.

“I wasn’t ready to completely retire,” Kennett said. “I couldn’t just sit at home and still wanted to work with the public.”

Kennett is a native of Leachville. He said from 1977-80 he was in the U.S. Army, stationed at Ft. Hood, Texas. After his time in the service, he owned a photography studio in Texas. In 1987, he had a desire to be closer to home. Child Art Studio in Paragould became available and he purchased it.

He is married to Dot Kennett who is a fourth grade teacher at Woodrow Wilson Elementary. Their daughter Lori is a sixth grade English teacher in Chicago. And their son Matthew works at Acxiom Corporation in Conway.
