After two years of waiting, the city of Oak Grove Heights should have an improved playground area by summer’s end.
Oak Grove Heights mayor Ed Smith said at Tuesday night’s city council meeting that the new playground was ordered nearly three weeks ago and should arrive in approximately five weeks. He hopes all the equipment will be ready for play by Labor Day.
“We’re proud we can do it and hope the people in the community will enjoy it,” Smith said.
According to Smith, the $25,000 in general improvement funds procured by State Sen. Robert Thompson III are being used for the purchase of several new pieces of playground equipment for the park. In addition, some of the funds received paid for the 20-foot-square pavilion currently under construction. The mayor said it should be completed within three weeks.
Smith said the Oak Grove Heights community leaders group also donated $5,000 towards the park improvements.
Oak Grove Heights secretary/treasurer Susan Rollins said a 36-by-66-foot area will be added to the existing playground. New pieces of equipment include a big mouth tiger crawl tube, a fire/rescue climber, a climbing wall, a maxi whirl, parallel bars, a mini-moon climber, a mini-scoop and a wiggle step.
In addition, a tetherball set, a volleyball set and a handicap accessible mini-scoop ride are being added.
“The new park equipment that will be added to the existing area of playground equipment will be a great asset for the children of our community,” Rollins said. “I’d like to thank those involved behind the scenes that made this happen.”
In other matters, Oak Grove fire chief John Messer said the firefighter’s auxiliary made a profit of $3,800 from the 4th of July fireworks sale. Plans are being made by the firefighter’s auxiliary to have an auction Sept. 25 to raise additional funds.
The mayor reported the city had to purchase a new air conditioning unit for the city hall at a cost of $3,500.
