When will my trash be picked up?
Public Works Director Lenny Edgar said the sanitation department has been flooded with calls from residents asking this question since Monday night’s city council meeting.
On Monday, the city council approved the new trash schedule which will take effect Aug. 11.
On Mondays, everyone who lives north of Highway 412 and west of Highway 49 will have their trash picked up. Anyone who resides north of Highway 412 and east of Highway 49 will see garbage picked up on Tuesdays. Garbage day will be on Thursdays for everyone who lives south of Highway 412 and east of Highway 49. Anyone who lives south of Highway 412 and west of Highway 49 will need to have their trash out Friday morning before 7 a.m.
“We do ask people not to set out the trash until trash day,” Edgar said. “They need to have it out by 7 a.m. If they have questions about trash pick-up, they can call the Sanitation Department.”
Edgar recommends people in the community to purchase sealed trash cans with lids to keep their trash until trash day. “That will keep animals and critters out of the garbage,” Edgar said. Garbage must be removed from the can and taken to the curb for pick-up.
The new schedule will allow the sanitation department to have only four trucks out daily instead of six which should save money on fuel costs.
Edgar said citizens will receive the same service. “It will just be picked up once instead of twice,” he said.
The sanitation department, city council members and Paragould Mayor Mike Gaskill expressed opinions that this solution could prevent the department from raising rates during the economic slump created by high fuel costs.
Edgar said a dumpster within the Public Works Department fenced area will be available for people to use in extenuating circumstances.

" How about the people that work a 12 hour shift from midnight to noon? How are they supposed to get their trash out if they cant put it out the night before? Did anyone think about that? "

" If the service is going to be cut in half, i.e., down to one day per week instead of two, then the price should be cut in half as well. The current decision is just another example of public officials using the state of the economy to justify maneuvers designed to make money off of citizens who have no choice nor say in the matter. "
