For those planning to burn that big pile of leaves raked up in the yard, the Paragould Fire Department would like to remind the public a permit is needed before doing so.
Paragould fire chief Kevin Lang said if a person were to do any kind of burning on their property, they should familiarize themselves with what is and what is not allowed.
“If you want to go by ADEQ, Arkansas Department of Environmental Quality, they don’t want you to burn anything. But they do allow the burning of yard waste,” he said. “We go a step further in the city to try to help people.”
Lang said the PFD allows people to burn wood-based products in the city, but the burning of petroleum-based products is not allowed. Petroleum-based products include shingles, tar paper, some furniture, tires and plastic. Lang said burning the coating off copper wire is also not allowed.
“If (people) are going to burn anything, they are supposed to call (the main) fire station and get a permit to burn,” Lang said. “We’re not going to give them anything written, but we have a list. We take down their name and address.”
Lang said permits are easy to obtain and free of charge. He said after finding out what the person wanting a permit is burning, the PFD will go over a few safety regulations with them.
“We’re going to tell them you cannot burn after dark,” Lang said. “That’s a state regulation. Have a water hose close to it. Someone has to be with it when it’s on fire. That don’t mean start it, go inside and drink coffee.”
Assistant fire chief Danny Rogers said one of the main reasons a person must call before burning anything is because it may be too windy and not a good idea to burn. Lang also said burning anything is not a right, it’s a privilege.
“If you’re burning (something) and your smoke is going into your neighbor’s yard, just smoking them out, and they call and complain, you’re going to have to put it out,” Lang said.
Anybody wanting a permit to burn their yard waste in the city limits must call the PFD main fire station at 239-7525.
