Kody Whitney of Paragould recorded a top-10 finish last weekend in his first Bassmaster Weekend Series (Arkansas Division) event of the season at Greers Ferry Lake.
Competing in the pro/boater category for the first time, Whitney placed seventh out of 58 competitors. His haul included five fish weighing 10.87 pounds. Tony Moser won first place with a stringer of five bass totaling 14.21 pounds.
“Kody had an excellent tournament for his first time as a pro/boater finishing in the top 10 while competing against some of the best bass anglers in the state,” said Kody’s father, Ross Whitney.
Ross Whitney said Kody had to overcome some difficulties with the weather and his boat to score in the top 10.
“Kody made a 20-mile run to his first fishing spot in pouring down rain, thunder and lighting,” Ross stated. “Running at an average speed of 70 miles per hour doesn’t take very long but the rain beats on you pretty good at that speed. It rained all day long. Kody had to overcome some boat problems, as usual, with a battery issue and a livewell aerator problem. He was able to fix the problems on the water and was able to make the 20-mile run back to check-in.”
The 17-year-old Whitney competed last season in the Weekend Series as a co-angler. The co-angler riding with him at Greers Ferry was Jonathon Patton, who placed ninth in his division.
“Jonathan told me after the tournament that he was worried the night before because of how young Kody was and didn’t think they would do very well,” Ross Whitney said. “Jonathan said that after a couple of hours in the boat with Kody that all the worry was gone and that he was very impressed.”
Kody’s next Weekend Series event is June 20 at Millwood Lake in Texarkana. Today, the Whitneys plan to compete in a benefit tournament at Lake Poinsett. Ross said proceeds from the tournament will go to Children’s Hospital in Little Rock.
