Marmaduke rolls over Riverside in NEA tourney

Published: Friday, December 23, 2011 12:07 PM CST
JONESBORO — Marmaduke started fast, getting a quick 13-4 lead, and never looked back in beating conference foe Riverside 51-31 in the boys’ Division II bracket of the Northeast Arkansas Invitational basketball tournament on Thursday at the Convocation Center.

Seniors Morgan Hawley and Derrick Donnell combined for 10 points in the first quarter as Marmaduke held the Rebels to 3-of-12 shooting.

The defense continued into the second quarter as both teams found the going tough, Marmaduke taking over two minutes to score and Riverside needing almost four minutes to get on the board. Hawley made use of the mid-range jump shot twice during an 8-3 spurt that extended the lead to 21-9 on a Will Winberry jumper from the right baseline. Logan Muerer hit a pair of free throws for Riverside, and Brock Adams hit a layup behind the defense to trim the lead to eight. A free throw by Dylan Vangilder set the Greyhounds’ halftime lead at 22-13.

Marmaduke began to take over in the second half, getting a quick 5-0 spurt to extend the lead to 14. Riverside got a basket from Morgan Fletcher to stop the run, but the teams traded baskets, and the Rebels were never able to get the margin lower than 13 in the frame, as the Greyhounds carried a 40-27 advantage into the final frame.

Marmaduke continued the defensive stand in the final quarter, starting the period on a 10-2 run and only allowing four points in the period to seal the victory.

For the Greyhounds, Hawley led the way with 16 points, while Zach McDowell added 13 and Donnell pitched in 10. Riverside was led by Alteeno Sain’s 10 points.
