New features coming with ‘Totally Local Tuesdays’

In the month since my daughter and I moved to Paragould, I’ve certainly noticed the accommodating nature this city so proudly promotes.
From the personal touch provided at Zayley’s daycare or the friendly smiles from department store checkers sincerely asking each customer, “How are you?”, we have been warmly greeted by a community, and a county, whose people regularly rise above and beyond the expected standard.
As any good newspaper is a reflection of the communities it covers, The Daily Press is committed to also rise above the expected standard for our readership.
Since announcing our forthcoming “Totally Local Tuesday” editions, the first of which will roll off the press Jan. 31, readers have offered positive feedback, suggestions and even material that will help us make this project a success. Additionally, we plan to unveil a pair of weekly features for our Tuesday editions that we hope will better inform, and engage, our readers.
Firstly, we want to provide a unique approach to a “Person of the Week” feature that will show a person’s impact on local society from a purely third-person perspective. We’re going to publish positive profiles on local people by interviewing those most impacted and inspired by each person. We’re talking about interviewing the person’s employer, co-workers, fellow church members and of course, family, to craft a piece that shows through the eyes of those most affected how many lives one person can touch, sometimes without even knowing it.
That’s right. We won’t interview the subject being profiled at all. In fact, we’re hoping that this weekly feature will be used as a pleasant surprise for the person being highlighted each Tuesday morning. We’re not just looking to highlight politicians, well-known local philanthropists or those understood to be “movers and shakers,” although we certainly won’t exclude those folks. But we believe that everyone, from every walk of life, has a story, and we want the opportunity to tell it. Who knows? One Tuesday, we may profile you.
Our paper’s “Totally Local Tuesday” editions will also include a Business of the Week feature. We hope to cover everything from “Mom and Pop” businesses to manufacturing industries. We want to tell stories of success and growth, but also show how these businesses addressed the challenges that sought to stunt their progress. Paragould and Greene County have worked hard to grow in an era when so much of America’s business base is shrinking, and The Daily Press wants to show on a weekly basis how one business, great or small, has contributed to that continued march forward.
Please e-mail nominees for our Person and Business of the Week, along with any other news or feature ideas, to zplair@paragoulddailypress.com.
