Paragould School Board opened its meeting Monday with a 2-hour executive session to consider the annual evaluation of Debbie Smith, interim superintendent, and to consider filling he superintendent’s position. January is the time of year districts routinely consider superintendent contracts.
The board came out of executive session and voted unanimously to enter into negotiations with Smith to hire her as superintendent.
Smith was hired in June 2011 as an assistant superintendent and after the buy-out of Aaron Hosman’s contract, she was hired as interim superintendent for the 2011-12 school year.
Board president Ron Kingston asked board members for a raised hand vote rather than a voice vote and asked that it be noted the vote was 7-0.
Kingston said the board would now research the pay of other area superintendents at comparable-sized school districts. He said the board would also look at the kind of benefits she would be eligible for and what benefits the board would want to provide.
Kingston said the board was not seeking other applicants at this time and would do so only if the negotiations with Smith didn’t work out.
Smith has served as assistant and superintendent at Marmaduke. She came to Paragould School District as a math specialist and a federal programs coordinator in 2007.
In other business the board accepted two contracts relating to technology. Vernon DuBar, technology coordinator, asked the board to accept a bid of $19,604 for upgrades to the RAM TV channel, and a contract for $28,558 to update 8-year old equipment in the EAST lab.
He said the EAST lab did a lot of cutting edge projects for the community, so it was time to get its equipment “back on edge.”
