PHS girls stay unbeaten in conference play

Layrock records double-double in win

Published: Saturday, January 21, 2012 12:07 PM CST
Paragould’s Sydney Layrock pumped in a game-high 19 points and the Lady Rams remained unbeaten in 5A-East play with a lopsided 77-33 win over Forrest City on Doc Paynter’s Court on Friday night.

The Lady Rams (13-4, 4-0 league) controlled the boards and scored several easy transition buckets against the outmatched Lady Mustangs.

“I thought we played well defensively,” PHS coach Jay Cook said. “[Forrest City] is the type of team that you have to be fundamentally sound on offense and we were focused for the most part.”

PHS led 26-12 after one and the rout was on. The difference swelled to 66-29 in the second half and Cook turned the game over to his reserves in the third period.

Layrock also had 11 boards to earn a double-double on the night. Savannah Walker hit 16, Rachel Dicus added 13 points, Morgan Tripod scored 11 to complete PHS’ double-digit scoring. Sarah Dicus, Keelee Rushing and Miyanna Garrett had five each and Carson Gill finished with four.

In the boys’ game, the Rams gave Forrest City a tough battle before fading in the final frame, losing 71-51.

Chase Garner fueled the Rams’ attack with 20 points.

PHS trailed by only 31-28 at halftime but pulled to within one, 34-33, on a bucket by Garner early in the third period. After Forrest City misfired, a Garner triple gave PHS its first lead of the second half, then the Rams came up with a steal and Blake Bales pushed the lead to 38-34.

But the Mustangs responded with a 26-10 run to deny the Rams their second straight conference win.

Michael Stidham also hit in double digits for PHS with 10. J.J. Jimenez and Dextor Thompson added six each, Chase Brittingham and Logan Davis put in four apiece and Tyler Hestand had one.

PHS hosts Greene County Tech on Tuesday.
