Greene County Community Christmas feeds area residents

Some of the 50 Greene County Community Christmas volunteers prepare meals for delivery at the B.C. Lloyd building. Organizer Rachaele West said 300 meals were delivered, and carry-out meals were prepared for at least another 1,100 area residents.

Greene County Community Christmas made meals for area residents on Christmas Eve.

About 50 volunteers came to the B.C. Lloyd building at the Greene County Fairgrounds to prepare traditional Christmas dinners for delivery to 300 residents.

They also prepared takeout meals for at least an estimated 1,100 more.

“That’s what we have been averaging over the years,” said organizer Rachaele West. “And at first we thought that because of the pandemic we’d have much fewer, but now we are figuring much more. We’ve even had people from Craighead County call us to ask if they could come, too.”

West said the meals prepared included turkey, dressing, green beans, corn, potatoes, rolls and desserts.

This Greene County Community Christmas is the 11th annual event. In contrast to past years, however, there were no sit-down meals served, in light of the coronavirus threat.

In addition, for the same reason, there was no hand-out of toys for children this year.
