Greene County Tech is working toward solidifying its virtual learning capability.

The school district’s board of directors recently voted to approve the first and second readings of a Virtual School Facilitator Job Description. “We need to have someone who can devote all their energy and time to our virtual students,” said district superintendent Gene Weeks.

He said the district is anticipating about 188 second- through 12th-grade students being virtual for the 2021-2022 school year. The facilitator is to work with the district’s to-be-outsourced virtual provider. “Right now it looks like we will be using Virtual Arkansas for our [grades] 7-12 students,” Weeks said, “and Edgenuity for our [grades] 2-6 students.”

Virtual Arkansas operates out of Plummerville, Ark. while Edgenuity is based in Scottsdale, Ariz. As both organizations are to be engaged to provide professional services, no bid is required or permitted.

The district is also set to resume summer lunches. The board voted to partner with the state Department of Human Services’ Division of Child Care and Early Childhood Education Summer Food Service Program for the summer of 2021. “We will be opening two cafeterias this summer,” Weeks said. “One will be at the Primary and the other at the Elementary.”

Details of the program will be forthcoming at a later time.

Also in the realm of technology, the board approved a quote of $102,336.44 (including tax) from CDWG for the purchase of two Core Hewlett-Packard Aruba 5412 Switches with Modules, two Hewlett-Packard Aruba 7210 Wireless Controllers, and 65 New Hewlett-Packard Aruba 505 Wireless Access Points.

Weeks said the equipment will be purchased off the cooperative purchasing contract TIPS/TAPS and will be paid from Elementary and Secondary School Emergency Relief (ESSER) Funds. The district currently has two wireless systems and over the past several years had been upgrading a building at a time to the new system. Weeks said the purchase will complete that process, enhance the district’s wireless service, and create redundancy to avoid loss of use of the wireless system.

The board approved a bid of $85,425 from Architectural Roofing & Construction, Inc. of Jonesboro to reroof the Multi-Purpose Building, which was the lowest of three bids for the project. Other bids were $87,571 from Jonesboro Roofing Company, Inc., and $121,930 from Senath-based Quality Roofing Contractors of Southeast Missouri, Inc.

The school board also approved a bid of $49,175 from Quality Roofing Contractors to reroof the Bus Shop. The other bids were $51,590 from Architectural Roofing & Construction, Inc. and $62,293 from Jonesboro Roofing Company, Inc.

The board also re-employed the entire certified staff of the district, and also undertook the following additional personnel actions:
