Cody Baker, 30, of Paragould, faces several counts on felony charges of domestic battering in the second degree, and endangering the welfare of a minor in the first degree, following an investigation by the Greene County Sheriff’s Department.

Alexis Leanna Murray, 26, also of Paragould, faces charges on three counts of permitting abuse of a minor, a Class D felony.

The investigation began March 14 after Greene County 911 Dispatch received a call from a woman babysitting three children on Greene 607 Road. She advised that she could not get in touch with the parents, who had left the day before, and that the children had been left without adequate supplies for her to properly care for them.

Deputy Kaleb Pitcher arrived and noted the condition of the home, which was not clean and safe for children, according to the affidavit for arrest. Pitcher contacted the Child Abuse Hotline, and waited for officials with the Department of Human Services to arrive at the residence.

When Murray, the mother of the children, called the babysitter at about 5 p.m., Deputy Pitcher spoke with her, and told her that she needed to come home as soon as possible, the affidavit states. He reports that she stated she was two hours and 15 minutes away.

According to the affidavit, the children, ages 5, 6, and 9, all spoke of abuse allegedly being dealt to them and their mother by Baker.

DHS arrived and placed the children in their care after their investigation at about 8 p.m. Neither Murray, nor Baker had arrived by that time. A forensic interview with the children was conducted Friday, according to the affidavit.

“During the interview all three children spoke of physical and mental abuse at the hand of Cody Baker,” the affidavit states. “All three children also stated that Alexis Murray was being physically abused by Cody Baker.”

The affidavit, dated March 21, also states that during the interview, two of the children were still showing bruising that had been documented when deputies first made contact with them earlier.

A cash-only bond of $10,000 was set for both Baker and Murray.
