Officials with a Missouri-based company spoke Tuesday with the NEA Regional Solid Waste Management Board about the possibility of picking up some commercial cardboard in the district in the future.
The officials with Marck Recycling and Waste gave the presentation to the board during its monthly meeting.
Right now, the company, based in Cassville, Mo., does pick up cardboard from restaurants in the Paragould area. They are looking to possibly expand to the other counties in the region.
The company’s vice president, Mike Wilson, told the board that they are operating in several places including Jonesboro. He said the company’s goal is to create a one-stop place where recycling is first and foremost, with trash hauling second.
According to the company’s website, Marck also has locations in Brookland, Fort Smith, Rogers and Lowell in the state of Arkansas.
Wilson told the board that the cost of certain kinds of cardboard has plummeted in the past six months, going from $150 to about $30 now.
A decision was not made during Tuesday’s meeting and the presentation was informational. However, Walnut Ridge Mayor Charles Snapp, who serves on the board, said it could be a proverbial Catch-22 in that while it could hurt the landfill in the short term, it may help long-term in freeing up space.
In other action, the board elected new officers for 2023. They include board president Paragould Mayor Josh Agee, vice president Clay County Judge Mike Patterson and secretary Pocahontas Mayor Keith Sutton.
Board members also received reports from landfill executive director Joseph Pence.
They include adding Juneteenth as a personal day for landfill employees, updating trailer cubic yards this year for customers to calculate their costs, start taking credit cards from customers, with work expected to be done by the end of March, a one-acre purchase of land at the landfill, getting a map for monitoring wells and looking to purchase solar panels for the leachate pumps at the landfill.
