The Greene County Tech School District will save close to half a million dollars due to bond refinancing.

According to information made available by district superintendent Gene Weeks, the board approved a resolution at its Dec. 17 meeting to refinance its Nov. 1, 2014 Construction Bonds. The refinancing will enable a total projected savings of $441,439.92 over the remainder of the current school year budget and those of the next two school years.

“We will take $41,071.25 of the savings in the 2020-21 school budget,” he said, “$198,033.04 in the 2021-22 school budget and $176,311.25 in the 2022-23 school budget.”

Weeks said the district had been working with Stephens Public Finance over the previous 11 months to achieve interest savings by refunding bonds. “And we were successful this past Wednesday [i.e. Dec. 16],” he said.

The board also approved a Contract Disclosure Form to conduct business with Peyton Laubach, son of board member Lora Laubach. The estimated amount of business for the entire year is less than $10,000. The younger Laubach does basketball officiating, and Weeks estimated the total amount Laubach would receive to be less than $500 a year.

Weeks also noted the board had declined a bid of $416,000 from Jonesboro-based RGB Mechanical Contractors, Inc. for replacement of the heating, ventilation and air-conditioning unit in the Multipurpose Building. Weeks said the bid from RGB was the lower of two bids received, but regarded as too high. “So we’ll either have to negotiate with them,” he said, “or rebid it.”

The unit, Weeks said, is more than 30 years old.

The board had approved renewal of the district’s License Agreement with Microsoft for its Office 365 A3 & Microsoft Core Infrastructure Server Suite from Somerset, N.J.-based SHI for the 2021-22 school year. Total cost of the license is $16,031.24.
