Greene County Tech’s Golden Eagles advanced to the semifinals of the Class 5A boys’ state basketball tournament with a win over Maumelle on Thursday night in Pine Bluff. GCT will play in the semifinals today at 1:30 p.m. at the Pine Bluff Convention Center.
The Eagles got off to a slow start, finishing the first quarter down 17-6, but outscored Maumelle 14-7 in the second quarter to close the gap to 24-20 at the half.
Maumelle extended the lead to 44-38 at the end of the third quarter, but the Eagles used a strong fourth quarter to pull away for a 66-59 victory.
Free throws proved to be the difference for GCT as the team was 22-of-31 from the charity stripe.
Benji Goodman led the Eagles with 20 points. Tyler Vincent added 18 points and 11 rebounds, and Landon Stuart contributed 16 points and eight boards.
On Wednesday, GCT dominated the second and third quarters to defeat Siloam Springs 57-41 in first-round action.
The Eagles outscored the Panthers 35-14 over the middle quarters as they took leads of 27-17 at halftime and 44-24 at the end of the third quarter.
Vincent was 9-of-15 from the field to lead the Eagles with 26 points, also grabbing eight rebounds. Goodman was 3-of-8 from the 3-point line while adding 12 points.
Colter Hunt was 3-of-3 from the 3-point line for nine points; Stuart grabbed 10 rebounds; and Jonah Lane had a team-high five assists for GCT.
Marmaduke
Marmaduke’s Lady Greyhounds saw their season come to an end in the quarterfinals of the Class 2A girls’ state basketball tournament at Rector on Thursday night.
Hector took a 36-21 lead into the locker room and never looked back as they defeated the Lady Hounds, 83-53.
Baylie Joiner had 22 points, 12 from the free throw line, and Makenzie Hampton added 18 points for Marmaduke.
Marmaduke advanced to the quarterfinals with a 57-43 victory over Rison on Wednesday night.
Hampton led the Lady Greyhounds with 32 points, and Chancey Henry added 17 points for Marmaduke.
Paragould
Paragould’s fourth-quarter rally fell short Wednesday as Siloam Springs escaped with a 40-39 victory in the first round of the Class 5A girls’ state basketball tournament in Pine Bluff.
Siloam Springs led 22-16 at halftime and 36-24 after the third quarter. The Lady Rams outscored the Lady Panthers 15-4 in the final period.
Dixie Williams was 3-of-7 from the 3-point line in scoring 13 points for Paragould. Shakira Brown added 11 points, while Mikayla Lambert contributed five points, eight rebounds and four assists.
