MONTGOMERY, Ala. – The Crowley’s Ridge College Lady Pioneers gave head coach Brad Phillips his first win at the helm, defeating the Faulkner (Ala.) University Lady Eagles in the Christian College Classic 73-63.
The Lady ‘Neers (1-1) jumped out to a 19-9 lead in the first quarter, led by the one-two punch of Nakeeva Brandon and Kianna Hardaway in the post.
Faulkner (1-1) began shooting better in the second quarter to close the gap to 31-24. At intermission, the Lady Pioneers out-rebounded their opponents 32-22, while holding the Lady Eagles to shooting 19 percent from the floor.
The Lady Eagles came back strong in the third and fourth quarters, tying the game at 39 with 2:52 remaining in the third off of a Micala Fisanick three-pointer. The tie would be as close as Faulkner got, with Kianna Hardaway and Travia Woodruff combining for an 8-0 run to end the quarter.
That run knocked any wind out of the sails of the home team, with the Lady Eagles not coming any closer than seven points before the buzzer sounded to give Crowley’s Ridge the 73-63 lead.
As a team, CRC shot 46.8 percent from the floor, led by Octavia Lowery’s 26 points. Behind her offensively was Kianna Hardaway’s 19 points and Travia Woodruff’s 13.
The Lady Pioneers front-court impressed Coach Phillips with a 36-point night in the paint. “I thought our forwards and posts played well tonight,” Phillips said, “total team effort.”
CRC falls victim to FC reboundingThe Lady Pioneers continued their weekend at the Christian College Classic by taking on the Falcons of Florida College.
Tipoff from Faulkner University’s Tine Davis Gymnasium was at 3 p.m.
The Pioneers were out-rebounded by 30 boards in a loss to the Florida College Lady Falcons 81-57.
The first ten minutes were the closest of the afternoon, ending with only two points separating the schools. Crowley’s Ridge (1-2) was able to get 16 points thanks to Octavia Lowery’s points. However, the Falcons still managed to pull ahead 18-16.
From there, the Lady Falcons (4-2) put the proverbial pedal to the metal by scoring 20+ points in the middle quarters, led by Rylee Everett’s seven three-point field goals.
The final quarter had Lowery and Cunningham trying to push back for Crowley’s Ridge, but the damage was ultimately done.
The Lady Pioneers were out-rebounded by the Lady Eagles 61-31, with 25 coming off of the offensive glass.
Crowley’s Ridge was led for the third time in as many games by senior Octavia Lowery’s 15+ point performance. Despite the rebound differential, all Lady Pioneers who recorded minutes also recorded a rebound, led by Moreisha Thompson’s six.
Crowley’s Ridge is scheduled to travel across Arkansas’s northern border for a doubleheader with Baptist Bible (Mo.) College. Tipoff today for the ladies will be at 5 p.m., with the men scheduled to tip at 7 p.m.
